Beginnings

Getting the itch for the next challenge.

About three to four months before race day I was tempted by the idea of the TUM after talking about it with friends (who are also big-time into running). Do I go for the TUM50 or TUM102? At the time, I made no real commitment or plan and decided to defer the decision as late as possible. What I thought I would do in the meantime, was to up my running in the coming months to see what my body could handle.

This would be my first ultramarathon, whether 50km or 102km. To give some sort of idea of my running background, I’d run one marathon, one endurance race and a couple of half marathons, most some years ago.

The Auckland Marathon six years prior in 3h42:57.

The 1000km Great Virtual Race Across Tennessee (GVRAT) about seven months prior to the TUM. The race is three months long. My weekly run at the end of this race peaked at mid-70km. I started at high-30km per week.

A bit of a running dabbler, not pedigree…
